The first A -
International game in the world was played in Glasgow on 30 November 1872 between Scotland
and England. The game ended 0-0.
Nineteen years later, in 1901, South America followed when Uruguay met Argentina in a game
won 3-2 by Argentina. A year later the European continent debut international was
the game between Austria against Hungary, won convincingly by the Austrians 5-0. Africa's
first inernational was in 1910, and Asia's was in 1913.
Fifty years after the England - Scotland game,
Australia played its first A - International against neighbour New Zealand. The
first Captain in this historical game was Alex (Alexander) Gibb. He remains the most
capped Queensland State player to this time.
Many other Captains followed. Some for just one game,
a few others for many years. Australia has had real leaders, men who wore the green and
gold jersey with pride.
This is a gallery all A -
International Socceroo Captains from 1922 to the present.

These are only
the Captain's from full A-International games in the starting eleven !
"To play for your country is the greatest honour, whether it is marbles or
anything. When I received a telegram as a 19-year-old to say that I had been selected to play for the Socceroos, I went to the bathroom and cried my eyes out for hours. That is what it meant and that is what it should always mean"
Johnny Warren
"I`ve made my
name here I couldn`t have in England. There I would have proably been a run of the mill
club
soccer player. But here I can`t go any further, I`m captain of the Australian soccer team, and
elected by the players. It`s the greatest thing that`s ever happenend to me."
Peter Wilson, Australias first World Cup Captain 1974.
